Number porting checklist
Keep your business number when moving to VoIP
An established telephone number can be printed on vehicles, signs, invoices and thousands of customer records. Treat its transfer as a small migration project, not an administrative afterthought.
The central rule: do not cancel the old service first. Ask the receiving provider to confirm portability and its required process.
Before requesting a transfer
- Record the number, current provider, account holder and service address exactly as billed.
- Identify other numbers or broadband services attached to the same account.
- Ask the new provider to check whether the number is portable.
- Confirm whether transferring it will cease anything else on the old service.
- Agree a transfer date and temporary call-routing plan.
- Test incoming and outgoing presentation after completion.
A simple option for smaller businesses
A sole trader or small team may only need a cloud number that rings on a mobile or app. Larger teams may need queues, hunt groups, reporting and CRM integration.
